The Director of Lay Activities is responsible for developing a training program based on the mission, goals, and objectives of the organization. I have partnered with our President, Young Adult Representative and the District Directors of Lay Activities to develop the Biennial theme, a course of study and the outline for the study guide.
Training will be offered in a variety of formats including printed materials; face to face (at executive board meetings); regional training (both face-to-face and remote) and through webinars. Tentative training plans are being developed for the Lay Biennial and a Lay certification program with Payne Theological Seminary. |
The focus for 2017-2021 will be centered around Discipleship; Lay Ministry/Service; Global Leadership; and promoting the active engagement of Young Adults. The CLO study guide is being developed and should be ready for release by mid-summer.
Incorporating a portion of the quadrennial theme of the AME Church, the CLO biennial theme is “Laity walking humbly with God to do justice and love kindness.” The supporting scripture for the theme is from Micah 6:8 (NASB), “And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” All Lay Organizations are asked to use the theme and supporting scripture for Lay Witness Sunday services, training sessions, and programs.
Under the leadership of our President, the Executive Board meetings have been reformatted to including training opportunities for all participants. During the November 2017 board meeting, participants received approximately 10 hours of training and materials including Lay Leadership 101. Lay Leadership 101 was developed to enhance our knowledge of what it means to be a servant leader. The tool was designed for members of the laity to revisit and rethink what does “God require” of us within and beyond the walls of the AME Church. Adopting the officers’ training model of the 7th Episcopal District, training will be offered during the June Executive Board meeting for officers at all levels. Lay Leadership 102 will be developed as the companion training tool for those attending the meeting.
In addition to the training offered at the Executive Board meeting, the laity will have the opportunity to participate in regional training, webinars and a certification program offered by Payne Theological Seminary. Training topics will include but are not limited to:
